How is your Mitochondria? 

"What is it?" you say.  These are tiny power houses in our cells that produce cellular energy.  They produce more than 90% of our energy and they hold the key to how we age, why we develop disease, and why some of us die prematurely.This can explain why some folks in their 80's look like they are only 50 or 60.  Also, why some people develope age-related diseases and others don't. 

Many would like to believe that the healthy ones inherited good genes or they are just lucky.  Not really, it all has to do with the health of your mitochondria.

  CoenzymeQ10 (CoQ10)-  Every cell in your body needs CoQ10 to function, but as we age our natural supply diminishes and we must obtain it from  outside sources.  Even though you can receive some CoQ10 from  our food, it is nowhere near enough to bring us back to the levels of CoQ10 we had in our yuonger years.  Take 30-60 mg of CoQ10 daily.

  L-Carnitine- is manufactured in the body from amino acids found in protein.  When you exercise or are under a lot of stress your need for L-carnitine often exceeds the body's ability to produce it.  Heart muscle tissue, because of its high energy requirements, is particularly vulnerable to deiciency.  Fatty acids from our food aren't properly transported into our cells to fuel the mitochodria, so they starve and eventually shut down.  Take 250-500 mg of L-carintine daily.

   Alpha Lipoic Acid-This antioxidant is found inside every cell of the body and is the key cog in the metabolic wheel that turns glucose into energy for the body's needs.  Alpha Lipoic Acid works in water and in fatty tissues.  It helps to resuscitate other free-radical fighters like Vitamins E and C  once they've been oxidized.  It is a workhorse that helps to support the immune system and healthy liver function.  Take 50-150 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid daily.

  Vitamin C-Human beings have lost the ability to make their own vitamin C, so we must get ours from fresh fruits and vegetables.  It is a powerful antioxidant that strengthens the immune systen  and maintains capillary strength and elasticity.  Without Vitamin C your body cannot manufacture collagen, the key protein in our connectivetissues, cartilage, and tendons.  Take 400-1000 mg daily.

  Vitamin E-This antioxidant protects cell membranes and other lipid-containing material of the body, including LDL cholesterol (the bad one) from excessive oxidation.  Protecting against destructive LDL oxidation is a powerful means of supporting healthy heart function and preventing the cellular injury that causes atherosclerosis.  We must safeguard cell membranes to protect the mitochondria and the contents of the cell from damage.  Remember Vitamin C fights water-soluble free radicals and Vitamin E quenches fat-soluble free radicals.  So both are needed for healthy mitochondria.  Take 200-400IU of natural Vitamin E daily.
